Shirley Deuser-Snyder was an outstanding Rotarian. In 1989, she was one of the first women to join the Rotary Club of St. Louis. As a Rotarian for 24 years, and following the Rotary International motto of “Service Above Self”, she served the St. Louis community and Rotary Club 11 in many activities. In recent years she was still volunteering in programs like Old Newsboy Day, helping Rotary collect funds for St. Louis childrens’ charities.
Shirley broke new ground when elected as the first female President of the Rotary Club of St. Louis in 2003 – 2004.
In 2005, Shirley volunteered to personally join the fight against polio in the Rotary Polio Plus effort by traveling to Africa for two weeks to personally administer polio vaccine to hundreds of children. She was a great supporter of the program and gave a moving presentation of her experience.
Shirley joined Rotary in 1989 when she was a marketing and sales director for BJC Healthcare. She moved on as marketing director of Hyland House at St. Anthony’s Hospital.
She was also active in other civic programs as a member and officer/director in Downtown St. Louis, and the Chambers of Commerce in Fenton and Kirkwood.
A true St. Louisan, Shirley graduated from Beaumont High School in St. Louis and later Southeast Missouri State University. She completed her formal education at the Washington University Graduate School of Business Administration.
Shirley had a beautiful smile and was quick to laugh at anything. She made everyone feel comfortable and welcome. She was quick to volunteer to serve. She will continue to be an example as a great Rotarian for all who had the opportunity to know her.
