Sadly, or maybe not so sadly, I am writing the final Alleygations of the 2016-17 Rotary Club 11 Bowling Season! Yes, after 33 weeks of bowling with a couple of by-weeks mixed in the season has drawn to a close. But what a night we had in Week 33, Roll Off for 4 teams- Lorenz, Weiss, Milne and my Finches, along with Sweepstakes for the remainder of the league with a chance to win some prize money and Braggin’ Rights.
It was Weiss and Lorenz going head to head on Lanes 19 & 20, and Milne taking on Finch on 21 & 22.
Game 1 saw Lorenz take the lead with a 775. Followed up by Milne (739), Finch (701) and Weiss (696). Everyone was still in the hunt. Yes, of the four teams no one was able to hit their average. In fact only two bowlers were able to best their average. Jon “the secret weapon” Soifer and Greg Lorenz. Jon was looking forward to a showdown with the Finch secret weapon, Amie Bossi, but it did not materialize as Amie was a late scratch and could not make it to Olivette.
On the remaining lanes there was no shortage of nice games led by Don “LaRussa” Lorenz 211. Yes, I am still thinking what might have been if the Captain had rolled for his team. A decision kind of like hitting the pitcher 8th. Don did clean up in the Sweepstakes, however. Read on.
Team Finch was in need of a lift after Game 1 rolling with only three bowlers. They got a big lift when teammate Kevin Hadler walked into Olivette at the start of Game 2. His presence seemed to be what Team Finch needed as they rolled an 848 in Game 2 and moved into the lead with 1549, a mere 10 pins ahead of Team Lorenz (1539) with Team Milne (1514) and Weiss (1451) following. Above average games in the Final Four for Game 2 were; Lorrie Lorenz – 153, Dan Naes – 176, Jon Soifer – 138, Pete Milne – 150, Bob Kocher- 163 and the cowbells were ringing as I started with 7 straight and ended with a 243.
So, it all came down to Game 3. Team Finch had another nice game with an 837 to total 2386 and eliminate Milne (2272) but would it be enough. The door was open. Everyone settled in around Lanes 19 & 20 to see if Lorenz could get the 848 needed to take the crown. Team Weiss not yet eliminated needed a more heroic effort in Game 3- needing 936. Arnold Hadler and Greg Lorenz both had nice games with a 169 and 185, respectively, but it was not enough as they fell 31 pins shy (2355). Team Weiss finished in 4th (2242).
For Handicap Series Don Lorenz led the way with a 738. Nice shooting! Frank Brandhorst had a very respectable 687 in 2nd place. Many above average nights in the league from Dan Scott, Derrick Wendling, Rich Losciale, Mike Borough, shuffling Bob Barnes, Greg and Lorrie Lorenz, Arnie Hadler, Jon Soifer, Don Fuller, Ken Schuman, Doc Jones and myself.
High Handicap Game went to myself with a 265 and Don Lorenz close behind with a 256.
It was a Great Year! Easy for me to say, I know. But it is always fun to head out to Olivette on Monday nights, win lose or draw. Hope we see you all again next season!!!!!!
Hope to also see most of you next week for the BIG Bowling Banquet at LoRusso’s. Festivities begin at 5:30.
