The 100th St. Louis Rotary bowling league opened to a raucous full
house of fun and revelry at Olivette Lanes.
Rosie Cooper, back from a year off for duty as 6060 district governor,
waved the American flag as all stood at attention for the National Anthem.
No slackers on this night!!.
Proprietor Don Klackner “warned” us that his new oiling equipment
is really having an improved effect on the lane conditions!
Yes it has!
Coach threw the first strike of this historic season on his first attempt.
Someone hollered out, “You haven’t thrown a strike like that since week
23 last year!”
That started the fireworks………..verbal and otherwise!!!
A near colossal feat occurred on this opening night when the Goop
Critzas started the first game with 10 strikes, finishing with a remarkable
289 game. When Matt Wilson finished HIS first game with a very fine 244,
someone from the Weiss Guys team shouted out, “That’s twice now
Wilson is coming up short of the Goop Man!” Couldn’t be any reference
to height here, eh?
Blake took top honors with the 289, then a 215 for a 691 series. Hot
hot, hot! Well done!
Other fine starts to the evening were Arnold Hadler’s 212, Ralph’s 216,
566 series, Klackner’s 204, 524 series, with Matt finishing with a 545 series.
NewcomerJeanine Conway led the women with a 431 series. Welcome
to the league Jeanine. Hoping hubby Dan doesn’t mind the competition!
A humongous pot for the 50/50 produced a $73 payout won by Doug
Lorenz. Again, someone from the Weiss Guys shouted out, “That’s $72
more than he has EVER had in his wallet………we’ll never see that again!”
Being that we are celebrating our 100th year of bowling we can expect
to hear some nostalgic announcements throughout the year. The first
occurred midway through the second game, producing a standing
ovation, when it was announced that this is Bob Barnes’s 54th year
of bowling in the Rotary bowling league. Way to go Newsie! I was still
dirtying my shorts……wait, I would’ve been 11, well, yeah okay, I would’ve!!
Week 2 of season 100 will be just as much fun!
Come on out and have a cold frosty One!
Strikes & Spares!
