8th grade awards ceremony – Pamoja Academy
For the past couple of years I’ve assisted with the 8th grade awards presentation and they have all been special. But this year, the Pamoja Academy 8th grade promotion ceremony was unique and reinforced why I like to volunteer for this Rotary Club 11 program each year.
Pamoja Academy, formerly known as Cole Elementary, is educates based on African-centered teaching and learning. Therefore, at the promotion ceremony, all the teachers, administrators and students were in traditional African dress. The students played African drums and other instruments and the elders of the community led the 8th graders into the auditorium.
I enjoyed the cultural experience, but of course, the presentation of the Webster University scholarship was a highlight of the program. As you’ve heard before, I got a standing ovation from the audience. But this year, through her tears of joy, the mother of the scholarship awardee gave me a hug.
So next year, when the club is looking for volunteers to present these awards, try to make time in your schedule to do one. It will be one of the most rewarding Rotary experiences you will ever have.
Pamoja Preparatory Academy will be a global model of African-centered teaching and learning, a center and community of academic excellence and uncompromised expression.
Pamoja Preparatory Academy will equip all students with a strong sense of personal development, personal identity, purpose, direction, and cultural identity. Academic and leadership skills will be enhanced to prepare students for the restoration of the local community and participation in the global community of this century and beyond.
